Tonometry

Early glaucoma detection and treatment are key. Learn about painless pressure tests & risk factors.

Tonometry helps us detect issues with your dog or cat’s vision. Using a tonometer, we can test their eyes without sedation. The procedure only takes a few minutes and doesn’t cause your dog or cat any pain. If you have questions about tonometry, please contact us at 306-373-3500.

What does tonometry detect?

Tonometry detects pressure within the eye, which is associated with glaucoma and other eye conditions. Glaucoma can cause permanent loss of vision and even lead to blindness if it’s not treated. Some dogs and cats are predisposed to the conditions (primary glaucoma), whereas others develop the conditions after an eye injury or disease (secondary glaucoma). Some breeds predisposed to glaucoma include Labrador retrievers, basset hounds, Siberian huskies as well as Siamese, Burmese and Persian cats.

What are the signs of glaucoma?

Glaucoma is caused by a lack of drainage of eye fluid. It is often a painful condition for dogs and cats and often progresses quickly. Some symptoms associated with the condition include:

  • Discharge from the eyes
  • Eye rubbing
  • Eye appears cloudy
  • Eye swelling
  • Vision loss

Can glaucoma be treated?

If glaucoma is detected with the tonometer, our veterinary team will discuss a course of treatment for your dog or cat. We’ll prescribe some medication that will decrease the pressure in your dog or cat’s eyes as well as reduce any pain or discomfort. Regular eye exams will be essential to assess the effectiveness of the treatments and determine the overall health of their eyes.
