1. What you are feeding them – some pet foods claim to be “complete” and it’s important to be aware of the necessary nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that are needed for your pet. Some pet foods may not be as nutritionally balanced as they claim
2. How much you are feeding them – each diet is formulated different and therefore the calories per cup are different. The right amount needed for your pet can be hard to figure out since all pets come in different shapes and sizes. Our office can calculate the calories needed for your pet and how much of your current diet to feed!
3. What are they getting for treats – remember that treats should only make up approximately 10% of your pets daily calories. Some treats are quite high in calories so even one treat a day may be adding on much more than you think.
4. Giving them a variety – change isn’t always good. Changing your pets diet can upset your pet’s system. Even though we like variety, most pets are perfectly happy eating the same diet every day! If you do need to transition to a new diet, we recommend gradually mixing both diets over a week.
5. Consider exercising – pets, like people, need to be active to stay healthy. Most dogs need 30-60 minutes of exercise per day, depending on their breed. While some active, working dogs need closer to 60 minutes of exercise for stimulation; other breeds might only need 30 minutes! When deciding on a food for you pet, keep their activity level in mind!
The ultimate goal is to keep your pet happy & healthy for as long as possible! We want them to live out their years with minimal to no complications just like you do. Diet & exercise is just as essential for your dog or cat as it is for your other family members. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 306-373-3500 or email at info@cumberlandvetclinic.ca. We can help you calculate the right amount to feed your pet! And if you are in the market for a new food, we have plenty of healthy, well-balanced, nutritional options.
